On a late winter day in August, ELICOS students took a tour to Cockatoo Island, the largest island in Sydney Harbour that has a long and complex history and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2010. As planned, the students met at Wynyard station in the morning and walked to Barangaroo wharf where they caught a ferry ride to the destination. The 20-minute ferry trip turned out to be the students’ one of the most favourite activities of the day as they could experience the beauty of Sydney Harbour. When arrived, the students were attracted by the noisy flocks of cockatoos. They then engaged in a self-guided audio tour to understand why this place was named Cockatoo Island, who traditionally inhabited there, when it was discovered by Europeans and when it was used as a convict prison, and other activities which have made this place a cultural attraction. On the way back, the students enjoyed taking photos/filming the beautiful view of Sydney and experienced peaceful atmosphere of the city in a cold and windy day. What an interesting adventure!
