English For Pre-Foundation Studies

This course is available for both domestic and international students (CRICOS 076367G)

The course is for students who want to learn the basic and day-to-day English in Australia. It aims at providing different opportunities, in and out of the classroom, to learn the language. The course focuses equally on all skills, i.e. Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, and the lessons are divided among the various skills. The weekly modules of our customized curriculum put special emphases on vocabulary, grammar and pronunciations. The many different themes such as ‘Working Life’ and ‘Life Stories’ will also provide the opportunities to learn the local culture and society. Teachers have included various learning activities, in and out of the classroom, to ensure the highest involvement and interaction of the students.

Our EPFS has 4 levels of studies, and students will progress to the next level if they pass their level assessment satisfactorily. The 4 levels are:

Level 1  – Beginner (10 weeks): At this level you will develop skills in:

  • basic grammar
  • the alphabet and key vocabulary
  • basic sentence construction
  • communication in simple social situations

Level 2 – Elementary (10 weeks): At this level you will develop skills in:

  • reading and understanding short texts
  • developing and building vocabulary and grammar
  • writing simple paragraphs
  • communication in different social situations

Level 3 – Pre-Intermediate (10 weeks): At this level you will develop skills in:

  • reading more difficult texts and genres
  • developing and building vocabulary and grammar
  • writing more complex paragraphs with cohesion and coherence
  • understanding Australian systems and culture

Level 4 – Intermediate (10 weeks): At this level you will develop skills in:

  • reading and interpreting longer texts
  • listening and understanding in a range of situations
  • writing brief essays dealing with factual materials or giving opinions
  • problem-solving in everyday life

total volume of learning

You are expected to spend between 30 to 35 hours per week studying for your course. Here is how the recommended hours are worked out.

TRAINING
  • You will attend classes for 20 hours per week, and
  • Your attendance is strictly monitored. Your teacher will mark your attendance and you have to attend classes at least 16 hours per week.
SELF-STUDY

On top of the weekly training contact hours, you are expected to invest up to 15 hours per week on self-study such as:

  • preparing your lesson before classes,
  • reviewing and consolidating your lesson after classes,
  • reading references,
  • doing research, etc.

This is recommended to make sure you understand your course more deeply and are ready for assessment.

ASSESSMENT

Every week has assessment tasks. You may have to spend up to 5 hours per week, depending on the number of tasks and its level of difficulty. For example, you complete knowledge questions, assignments and practical demonstrations of your English skills.
