NSW Department of Education mathematics teacher and YouTube sensation Eddie Woo has had the privilege of sharing his story with the nation, delivering this year’s NSW Australia Day address.
The internationally renowned teacher used this unique opportunity to reflect on what it means to be Australian, as well as highlight the importance of learning.
“As an advocate for teachers and the importance of teaching, I’m humbled to have this incredible opportunity and platform to address Australia,” Mr Woo said.
“Learning really is the core of my message – it’s why I am a teacher and delighted to be.
“If people take away one thing from my speech, I hope it’s being willing to embrace learning of all things for all people.”
The Australia Day address is a celebration of thought, diversity of opinion and freedom of speech, and it raises questions about our future, while reflecting on our significant past.
“When I was first asked to give this address, I questioned myself and what it means to be Australian, because that’s not the kind of thing you consciously think about on a daily basis,” Mr Woo said.
“It’s a great source of pride to be Australian, and there are so many things we can be delighted and pleased about.
“I hope the thoughts and themes I’ve raised will inspire others to reflect on their own stories and the ways we each contribute to that wonderful thing we call Australian society.”
A teacher of more than 10 years, Mr Woo is the head mathematics teacher at Cherrybrook Technology High School. He started posting videos online in 2012 for a sick student, who was missing a lot of school. Wootube now has more than 100,000 subscribers and upwards of nine million views worldwide.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the teacher’s innovative and dynamic methods have transformed the way students relate to mathematics.
“Through his unique ability to engage with young people, Eddie has helped countless students overcome a fear of maths and nurture a love of learning,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“Eddie’s passion and dedication to teaching, along with his personal story, are truly inspiring.”
